put (someone) down : (someone을) 깎아내리다, 바보로 만들다.

     누군가(someone)를 아래로 두다(put down)는 의미에서

     '깎아내리다' 라는 뜻이 만들어진다.

 

ex1) You have the right to respond to people who criticize you or put you down

      당신에게는 당신을 비난하고 무시하는 사람들에게 대응할 권리가 있습니다.

 

ex2) They can stick up for themselves without putting each other down.

      그들은 서로를 무시하지 않으면서도 스스로를 옹호할 수 있습니다.
